Grade 12 math in Ontario: MHF4U, MCV4U or MDM4U

The three Grade 12 university preparation math courses in Ontario explained: what each one covers, the prerequisite rule that catches families out, and which courses your child's university programme will actually ask for.

Ontario offers three Grade 12 university preparation math courses. They are not three levels of the same subject, and they are not interchangeable. Choosing without checking what the university actually asks for is the mistake families make most often, and it is usually discovered too late to fix.

The three courses

CodeCourseCoversUsually needed for
MHF4UAdvanced FunctionsPolynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions, rates of changeAlmost everything. The most widely required of the three
MCV4UCalculus and VectorsDerivatives, applications of calculus, vectors and geometry in three dimensionsEngineering, computer science, mathematics, physical sciences
MDM4UMathematics of Data ManagementProbability, statistics, data analysis, and a major independent projectSocial sciences, humanities, some business and health programmes

The prerequisite rule that catches people out

MCV4U cannot be taken before MHF4U. Ontario requires Advanced Functions to be completed first, or taken at the same time. This is a curriculum rule, not a school policy.

Taking them together is permitted by the curriculum, not merely tolerated. It is still worth thinking about, because Calculus and Vectors builds directly on the function work. A student carrying both in one semester is learning the foundation and the thing built on it at the same time, in a year that is already busy.

The other prerequisites are simpler. MHF4U needs Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U). It also accepts MCT4C, but note that MCT4C is a Grade 12 college preparation course, so that is a route for a student moving across from the college stream rather than an alternative Grade 11 choice. MDM4U needs MCR3U or Functions and Applications (MCF3M), both Grade 11 courses.

What MDM4U really is

Data Management is often described as the easy option. That is not accurate and it causes real damage.

It is a different subject, not a lighter one. Probability, statistics and data analysis suit some students far better than calculus ever will, and the independent project rewards students who can plan and write as well as calculate.

The risk is not the difficulty. It is admissions. Several university programmes will not accept MDM4U in place of MHF4U. A student can earn a strong mark and still find the programme they want is closed to them. Before choosing MDM4U as the only Grade 12 maths, check the specific programmes on eINFO and on the university admissions pages rather than assuming.

Which combination to take

This follows from the degree, not from the student’s current mood about maths.

  1. Engineering, computer science, physics: MHF4U and MCV4U. Treat these as required. Toronto Engineering, Waterloo Computer Science and Queen’s Engineering and Computing all name both. For a mathematics degree, check the specific university: Toronto Metropolitan asks for MHF4U plus either MCV4U or MDM4U.
  2. Business and commerce: MCV4U, not MDM4U. This is where families go wrong most often. Queen’s Smith Commerce names Calculus and Vectors plus one more Grade 12 maths course. Rotman Commerce at Toronto names Calculus and Vectors. McMaster DeGroote wants both MHF4U and MCV4U. A student who takes MHF4U and MDM4U and skips Calculus and Vectors closes all three.
  3. Life sciences, health sciences, kinesiology: MCV4U appears more often than parents expect. Queen’s Life Sciences and Biochemistry names Calculus and Vectors rather than Advanced Functions. Queen’s Health Sciences accepts either. Since MCV4U cannot be taken without MHF4U anyway, a student on this path usually ends up with both.
  4. Social sciences and humanities: The most flexible, and often no Grade 12 mathematics is required at all. Toronto’s Social Sciences admission category asks only for Grade 12 English. The catch comes later: economics and the quantitative social sciences generally need MHF4U, and frequently MCV4U, to enrol in the programme once admitted. Admission and enrolment are two different gates.

The practical advice: look up the exact programmes your child is considering before Grade 11 course selection closes, not after. Programme requirements are listed on eINFO, the Ontario universities’ information site, and on each university’s own admissions pages. They do change.

Where students lose marks

In MHF4U, the trouble is usually the behaviour of rational functions and rate of change. Note that MHF4U does not teach differentiation; that is MCV4U. Here rate of change is handled numerically and graphically, and students who can calculate an average rate of change often cannot say what it means in the context of the question, or describe what a graph does near an asymptote.

In MCV4U, vectors catch out students who were fine with calculus. The three-dimensional geometry is a genuinely different kind of thinking. Schools teach the strands in different orders, and some deliberately start with vectors so that students taking MHF4U at the same time have a term of function work behind them before the calculus begins.

In MDM4U, the project is where marks go. Students underestimate it, start late, and lose marks on method and presentation rather than on the statistics.

In all three, the pattern we see is the same one from Grade 11: a student whose function work was never secure finds Grade 12 much harder than it should be. That gap is worth closing before the year starts.

Getting help

Our math tutoring for Canadian students follows the Ontario curriculum, with tutors who teach these specific courses rather than mathematics in general. A free trial class starts with a marked paper, so the discussion afterwards is about the exact topic costing marks rather than a general assessment. The full range for Canadian families, including science and English, is on our Canada tutoring page.

Course descriptions and prerequisites are published by the Ontario Ministry of Education, and university programme requirements on eINFO. Confirm both, and speak to your child’s guidance counsellor, before course selection closes.

Parents ask

Questions parents ask

Can my child take MCV4U without MHF4U?
No. Ontario requires Advanced Functions (MHF4U) to be completed before Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), or taken at the same time. Taking them together is expressly permitted by the Ontario curriculum, not just by individual schools. Finishing MHF4U first is still the easier path, because MCV4U builds directly on the function work.
Is MDM4U an easier option?
It is different rather than easier. Data Management covers probability, statistics, data analysis and a major project, which suits some students much better than calculus does. The risk is not difficulty. It is that competitive programmes name MHF4U and MCV4U and simply do not list MDM4U as an alternative, so a student can do well and still find a door closed.
Which Grade 12 math do most universities ask for?
MHF4U is required or implied almost everywhere, because MCV4U cannot be taken without it. Engineering, computer science and the physical sciences want both. Competitive commerce programmes name MCV4U, not MDM4U, which is the point families most often get wrong. Social sciences and humanities are more flexible and frequently ask for no Grade 12 mathematics at all.
Should my child take all three?
Many students do, and it is a sensible choice for anyone aiming at engineering, computer science or a competitive business programme. It is a heavy load alongside other Grade 12 U courses, so it works when mathematics is a genuine strength rather than something being pushed through.
What are the prerequisites?
MHF4U requires Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U); it also accepts MCT4C, which is a Grade 12 college preparation course and so a cross-over route rather than a Grade 11 option. MDM4U requires MCR3U or Functions and Applications (MCF3M). MCV4U requires MHF4U before or alongside it. A student whose Grade 11 function work was shaky should fix that before Grade 12 rather than during it.
