Why it goes wrong

Four papers, and two of them are usually left to chance

PSLE English is examined across four papers: writing, language use and comprehension, listening comprehension, and oral. Most tuition concentrates on composition and comprehension because they feel like the academic core. Yet the oral examination alone carries a fifth of the total mark, and with listening the two neglected papers approach a third. They are the marks most often left to look after themselves.

Both are highly trainable. Situational writing is a format with fixed conventions of purpose, audience and tone. Stimulus-based conversation rewards a student who can develop a point rather than answer in a sentence, which is a habit that can be built in weeks rather than years.

What parents tell us

The real problem is rarely more practice

"His composition marks never move."

Usually because the feedback is about ideas when the marks are about control: paragraphing, tense consistency, vocabulary precision and a clear resolution. Those are teachable in a way that inventiveness is not.

"She answers oral questions in one sentence."

Stimulus-based conversation rewards developing a point with a reason and an example. That is a habit, and it is one of the fastest things to build in a PSLE year.

"Situational writing feels like a guessing game."

It is not. Purpose, audience and tone are fixed by the prompt and the conventions are consistent. It is one of the most reliably scorable sections in the paper.

"Synthesis and transformation is losing him marks."

A rule-based section that rewards drilling specific structures rather than general grammar work. We target the structures he is actually getting wrong.

How it works

How tuition runs for Singapore families

MOE syllabus at your child’s subject level, scheduled in Singapore time.

01

Free trial class

A real lesson with a subject specialist, and a read on which topics are genuinely weak rather than which ones feel hard.

02

Subject level check

We confirm the level your child takes each subject at, so the material is pitched where they are actually assessed.

03

Weekly slot in Singapore time

After school and weekends in SGT, with the same tutor each week.

04

Timed to the school’s own assessments

Parent-teacher meetings planned around the weighted assessments rather than arriving after them, with one on demand whenever you ask.

The same approach applies to every subject: our coaching methodology explains how a lesson is planned, marked and followed up. You can also see everything we teach in Singapore or read reviews from parents.

What families say about English

“We first contacted Jyoti after coming across Augment EduTech through a research on Google. We wanted help for our child preparing for IGCSE - English. Our child was already doing decent in English but we wanted professional help so he could sharpen his skill and more importantly come to realise that English is not a burden but an essential skill whose relevance extends beyond just curriculum. We got introduced to Ms. PRIYANKA and we were very fortunate to find a person who understand what we wanted to achieve. Over our first discussion she understood what we wanted, where are child was and how to best continue our childs skills development. Over the course of next few months as the classes progressed we noticed that our childs skills improved steadily and reflected in consistent performance. FINALLY in the IGCSE exams he scored a solid A which was the best he ever scored in English in his 2 years of IGCSE. Our child was very happy and we were very happy with the outcome and even his teacher was happy that he delivered a commendable results. We would whole heartedly recommend Augment Edutech to everyone. We also engaged them to prepare our child for Math Olympiads and it was a great experience.”

“The phonics program from Augment Edutech helped my child correct his pronunciation and letter sounds. He can recognize and read bigger words with clarity, and he is just 4! Love it, thanks Jyoti mam.”

Singapore parents ask

Clear answers before you start

Do you cover all four PSLE English papers?
Yes, including listening comprehension and the oral examination, which are the two most often neglected and among the most trainable.
Do you follow the MOE syllabus?
Yes, at the subject level your child takes, G1, G2 or G3 at secondary under Full Subject-Based Banding.
Can you help with General Paper at junior college?
Yes. GP rewards argument, evidence and current-affairs knowledge, so the work is different in kind from secondary English rather than more of it.
How much is each PSLE paper actually worth?
Writing carries a quarter of the total, with situational writing inside it. Language use and comprehension is the heavyweight at forty-five per cent. Listening carries ten and the oral twenty, which means the two papers most families skip are worth nearly a third of the mark between them. The plan allocates effort the way the examination allocates marks.
How is PSLE English scored?
As an Achievement Level from AL1 to AL8, which joins the other three subjects for a total where lower is better. Near the thresholds, a handful of marks moves the AL, and those marks are most often sitting in oral delivery, situational-writing conventions and synthesis and transformation: the trainable places.
What is Full Subject-Based Banding?
Secondary students now take each subject at G1, G2 or G3, with the starting level set by their PSLE result in that subject and movement possible later where results support it. A child can be G3 in English and G2 in another subject. We teach to the level your child actually takes, and toward the move where that is the goal.
What happens to the O-Levels?
From 2027 the national examination becomes the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate, with results reported at the level taken, G1, G2 or G3. The skills English rewards do not change: comprehension, summary, controlled writing and oral remain the work.
Should my child memorise model compositions?
Markers read the same memorised openings every year, and a composition bent to fit a prepared story usually scores worse than a simpler one that answers the question. What transfers from good models is structure, precision and planning, so that is what we teach.
Do you teach IB English or IGCSE First Language English?
Yes, for students in international schools rather than the MOE system.
Is one-to-one better than a group for oral practice?
For oral, decisively. A student gets a few minutes of actual speaking in a group lesson and a full session of it one to one.
Is all tuition one to one?
One tutor, one student by default, with the same tutor each week. Small groups of closely matched level can be arranged on request.
When do classes run?
After school, in the evenings and at weekends, Singapore time, in a fixed weekly slot that stays your child’s.
What if we need to miss a class?
Tell us in advance and the class is rescheduled at no extra cost. Moved with notice, it is never lost.
How do we see progress?
In the compositions and comprehension scripts themselves, marked against the examination’s own criteria, and directly from the tutor: notes every couple of weeks and parent-teacher meetings whenever you ask. Oral confidence usually moves first, within the opening weeks.
What do we need at home?
A laptop or desktop with a webcam and microphone and a steady connection. Classes run on Microsoft Teams, and the oral practice works best with a quiet room.
