Why it goes wrong

The board and the tier decide what preparation is worth doing

GCSE maths is graded 9 to 1 and entered at one of two tiers. Foundation caps the grade at 5; higher goes to 9 but puts a weaker candidate in front of questions designed to separate grades 7 to 9. That single decision changes what a year of revision should contain, and it is usually made by the school on the strength of mock papers.

Board matters too, less in content than in question style. Edexcel, AQA, OCR and WJEC structure papers differently and phrase questions differently, and the non-calculator paper in particular rewards fluency that generic revision does not build. Working from your child’s own board’s past papers and examiner reports is not a detail; it is most of the advantage tutoring can give.

What parents tell us

The real problem is rarely more practice

"The school is talking about entering him for foundation."

Ask for the evidence, and get your own. We mark past papers from his board at both tiers and score them against published boundaries, so the conversation with the school is about marks rather than impressions. Foundation caps at grade 5, so it is worth having early.

"She can do it with a calculator and falls apart on Paper 1."

The non-calculator paper tests arithmetic fluency that most revision skips entirely. It is trainable, and it is usually the cheapest few grades available in a GCSE year.

"He revises for hours and the mock grade does not move."

Re-reading notes builds familiarity, not recall, and GCSE maths marks are for method as much as answer. Timed past papers marked to the real mark scheme change this faster than more hours of the same revision.

"A Level is a completely different level to GCSE."

It is, and the step is largely algebraic fluency. Students who coped at GCSE by memorising procedures meet the limit in the first term of Year 12. The fix is the algebra, not the new content.

How it works

How tutoring runs for UK families

Taught to your board and tier, scheduled in GMT or BST.

01

Free trial class

A real lesson with a subject specialist, followed by a discussion of the gaps measured against the specification rather than against the year group.

02

Specification check

We confirm the exam board and tier, then work from that board’s past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports.

03

Weekly slot after school

Weekday evenings and weekends in GMT or BST, with the same tutor each week.

04

Marked against grade boundaries

Practice questions scored the way the board scores them, including method marks, so a predicted grade is evidence rather than a guess.

The same approach applies to every subject: our coaching methodology explains how a lesson is planned, marked and followed up. You can also see everything we teach in United Kingdom or read reviews from parents.

“Our daughter Abishri completed all 4 levels in abacus in 2 years. She developed significantly due to the Abacus classes. She gained a lot of confidence as well. Padma mam taught her very well and she was very friendly with her too. I would definitely recommend these classes to develop kids maths skills.”

UK parents ask

Clear answers before you start

Which exam board do you teach to?
Yours. AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC, working from that board’s past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports. Tell us the board and tier at the trial class.
What is the Year 4 multiplication tables check?
A statutory on-screen check: twenty-five questions on the 2 to 12 times tables, six seconds each. There is no pass mark and nothing to resit; its real message is whether recall is automatic, because everything in Key Stage 2, division, fractions, percentages, leans on it. We build that fluency in short bursts inside every session.
Is Year 6 SATs maths worth tutoring?
Only if the arithmetic underneath is shaky. If it is, the work is worth doing for secondary school and the SATs result is a by-product rather than the point. The reasoning papers reward reading the question properly, and that is a teachable habit.
Do you prepare for the 11 plus?
On request, yes. The numerical work for grammar and independent school entrance, including GL-style tests and the ISEB Common Pre-Tests, runs alongside normal curriculum tutoring from Year 5. Tell the advisor the target schools and the test date, because the timeline shapes the plan.
Can you tell us whether foundation or higher is right?
We can give you marked evidence from past papers at both tiers. The entry decision is the school’s, but you will have numbers rather than a feeling.
What happens if the GCSE grade comes out below a 4?
In England your child must carry on studying maths post-16 and resit until they reach a grade 4, so the question arrives either way. Resit preparation is narrower than first-time preparation: we find the specific papers’ lost marks and work on those, rather than rerunning the whole course.
How do you use past papers?
Timed, marked to the board’s real mark scheme, and scored against published grade boundaries, with the examiner reports read for the questions your child dropped. GCSE and A Level maths award method marks, so partial knowledge scores if it is written down properly. That habit alone moves grades.
Do you prepare for the UKMT challenges?
On request, yes. Schools enter students for the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Mathematical Challenges; we prepare them: no-calculator, multiple-choice problems that reward creative reasoning rather than speed through a syllabus. It is depth work, and it feeds back into exam maths.
Do you teach Further Maths?
Yes, where a specialist is available for the optional modules your child takes, since Further Maths varies more between centres than the main A Level does.
Do you support STEP, MAT or TMUA?
On request, where a specialist is available. These papers decide offers for the most selective mathematics, computing and engineering courses, and they reward sustained problem-solving that A Level alone does not build. Start early in Year 12 rather than in the autumn of Year 13.
Do you cover Cambridge IGCSE maths?
Yes. IGCSE is common in independent and international schools and its assessment structure differs from GCSE, so it is taught as its own course rather than as a variant.
Do you cover Scottish or Northern Irish qualifications?
Our specialism is the English and Welsh boards. For National 5, Highers or CCEA, the tutor works from your child’s own course materials and past papers rather than a syllabus of our own.
My child has given up on maths.
That is usually the mark talking, not the subject. One-to-one removes the audience, answers the question at the moment it occurs, and makes the first wins visible quickly. Confidence recovers before the grade, and then the grade follows it.
Is tutoring one to one?
One tutor, one student, the same tutor every week. A small group of closely matched level can be arranged on request.
When do lessons run?
After school, in the evenings and at weekends, UK time. The weekly slot is fixed and stays your child’s.
What if we need to move a lesson?
Let us know in advance and it is rescheduled at no extra cost. Moved with notice, the lesson is never lost.
How will we see progress?
In marked past papers scored against real grade boundaries, which is harder evidence than a feeling after a lesson. You also get notes from the tutor every couple of weeks and parent-teacher meetings whenever you ask. Working habits usually turn within the first six to eight weeks.
What do we need at home?
A laptop or desktop with a webcam and microphone and a steady connection. Lessons run on Microsoft Teams.
