Why it goes wrong

In Ontario, literacy is a graduation requirement, not just a subject

Ontario students must demonstrate literacy to graduate, normally through the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test in Grade 10. It is not a subject grade, it is a requirement, and it tests reading for meaning and short-form writing under time rather than anything a student has been revising. Students who read comfortably but write slowly are the ones it catches out. British Columbia runs the same idea twice, with graduation literacy assessments in Grade 10 and again in Grade 12.

Beyond that, Grade 12 university-preparation English carries real weight in admissions averages, and it is frequently the course that drags an otherwise strong average down, because essay marks are less predictable than mathematics marks and students rarely know why they lost them.

What parents tell us

The real problem is rarely more practice

"He has to pass the OSSLT to graduate and reads slowly."

The test rewards reading for meaning under time and short, clearly structured written answers. Both are trainable and neither is about literature. We work on the specific formats it uses rather than on general reading.

"Her Grade 12 English mark is pulling the average down."

Essay marks feel arbitrary to students because the rubric is rarely explained in terms they can act on. We mark her work against her teacher’s own rubric and show where the marks actually sit.

"He writes the way he talks."

Common, and fixable by teaching register explicitly rather than by correcting sentence by sentence. Academic writing is a dialect to be learned, not a personality trait.

"We moved from Quebec and the expectations are different."

They are. We work from your child’s own course outline and assessments rather than a national standard, because there is not one.

How it works

How tutoring runs for Canadian families

Matched to your province, scheduled from Newfoundland through to Pacific time.

01

Free trial class

A real lesson, and a report on where your child stands against their provincial curriculum rather than a national average.

02

Province and course check

We confirm the province and the exact course code before a tutor is matched, then work from your child’s own course material.

03

Weekly slot in your time zone

Evenings and weekends across six time zones, with the same tutor each week.

04

Progress before report cards

Regular parent-teacher meetings, and one on demand whenever you ask, so you are not learning about a problem from the report card.

The same approach applies to every subject: our coaching methodology explains how a lesson is planned, marked and followed up. You can also see everything we teach in Canada or read reviews from parents.

Clear answers before you start

Which province’s curriculum do you follow?
Ontario and British Columbia primarily. We confirm the province before matching a tutor and work from your child’s own course material.
What changed in Ontario’s elementary Language curriculum?
It was rewritten in 2023, following the Right to Read inquiry, around four strands with a much stronger emphasis on systematic, explicit foundational skills: phonics, decoding and fluency taught directly rather than left to be absorbed. Our early-reading work follows the same principle, because it is also simply how reading is learned.
My child is in Grade 3 and still guesses at words.
Guessing from the picture or the first letter is a habit the older teaching methods left behind, and it stalls exactly at Grade 3, when the pictures disappear and the words get longer. The fix is explicit decoding practice in short doses until it is automatic. Comprehension usually recovers on its own once the effort of reading the words drops.
Do you prepare for EQAO reading and writing?
Yes, for the Grade 3 and Grade 6 assessments. EQAO samples the curriculum itself, so sound classroom work is the preparation, with the question formats rehearsed nearer the assessment window.
Do you cover the de-streamed Grade 9 English course?
Yes. ENL1W has been one course for every level of readiness since 2023, which means the class moves at one pace through a very wide room. Students arrive in Grade 10 with individual gaps, most often in writing structure and in reading stamina, and one-to-one work is the straightforward way to find and close them.
Do you prepare for the OSSLT?
Yes. It is a Grade 10 graduation requirement rather than a graded subject, so preparation focuses on reading for meaning under time and on the short written formats the test uses. A student who writes slowly but reads well is the classic case it catches, and that is trainable.
Do you prepare for the BC literacy assessments?
Yes, both of them: the Grade 10 and Grade 12 Graduation Literacy Assessments. Neither is tied to one course; they assess making meaning from unfamiliar texts and communicating ideas clearly, so preparation is practice with cold texts and reflective writing rather than course revision.
How do you raise an essay mark in ENG4U?
By making the rubric concrete. Thesis, integration of evidence, analysis versus summary and control of register are each worked on through draft, feedback and revision, against the teacher’s own rubric rather than a generic one. Students stop losing marks they cannot explain, which is most of what makes English feel arbitrary.
My child reads all the time but the writing marks are low.
Reading feeds vocabulary and instinct, but writing is a separate, teachable craft: planning an argument, structuring paragraphs, revising a draft. Strong readers often skip the plan because the first sentence comes easily. We teach the craft explicitly, and the marks follow the structure.
Can you help with the Grade 12 independent study unit?
Yes, as planning, structure and feedback on drafts. The work remains your child’s.
Do you help with university application writing?
Yes, on the same terms as the independent study unit: planning, structure and honest feedback on drafts of supplementary essays and personal statements. The voice and the words stay your child’s own.
My child is in French immersion. Can you still help?
Yes, and it is a common case: immersion students spend most of their day in French, and parents want their English literacy, especially writing, to keep full pace. Tutoring is in English and runs alongside the immersion program. We do not teach the French-language curriculum itself.
Do you support students learning English as an additional language?
Yes, where the goal is academic English for the curriculum: vocabulary and sentence structure scaffolded without lowering the demand of the work. We do not offer general conversational language teaching.
Is it one to one?
Yes, one tutor with one student, and the same tutor week to week. A small closed group of matched level can be set up on request.
What times are available?
Weekday evenings and weekends, in your child’s own time zone. We teach families from Newfoundland to Pacific time.
What happens if a class is missed?
With advance notice the class moves to another slot at no charge, and your child’s regular weekly time stays theirs.
How do we follow progress?
In the writing itself, which moves through draft and revision rather than being marked once and abandoned, and directly from the tutor: notes every couple of weeks and parent-teacher meetings whenever you want one. Structure and reading responses usually sharpen within the first six to eight weeks.
What equipment is needed?
A computer with a camera and microphone and a steady connection. Classes run on Microsoft Teams.
