Decoding is a teachable skill, not a talent
A child who guesses at words from the first letter and the picture has not been taught to decode. It looks like reading for a while and then stops working, usually around the point where the pictures disappear from the books.
Systematic synthetic phonics fixes this in a specific order: sounds, then blending, then the irregular words English is full of. The order is what makes it work.

How a phonics course runs
Sounds before words, blending before fluency, in a fixed sequence.
Sound check
A free class where the tutor establishes which sounds the child knows and, more usefully, which they think they know.
Single sounds and blending
Letter sounds to consonant-vowel-consonant words, with the child sounding out aloud every session.
Digraphs and tricky words
Two-letter sounds and the high-frequency words that do not follow the rules and must be recognised.
Reading aloud
Continuous text at the right level, read to the tutor, with errors corrected as they happen rather than at the end.
