The Next Generation Science Standards are built on three dimensions: disciplinary core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and science and engineering practices. In practice that means a student is asked to construct an explanation, analyse data or evaluate a design, not simply to recall a definition. Revision that consists of memorising vocabulary prepares for one dimension out of three.
It compounds at Advanced Placement. AP Biology, Chemistry and Physics are explicitly application-heavy, and the free-response sections reward a student who can carry a principle into an unfamiliar context. The most common failure we see is a student who knows the material and stops after the first line of the question.

The real problem is rarely more practice
"He can recite it and cannot apply it."
Which is what the questions actually test. Every topic is taught through one worked problem and then a second that the student leads while the tutor watches where they hesitate. The hesitation is the lesson.
"Her lab reports lose marks and we do not know why."
The marks are in the analysis and the error discussion, not the method. We mark a real report with her against her teacher’s own rubric.
"Three sciences and one schedule."
At middle school one tutor can cover all three and continuity helps. At high school we match a specialist per subject, because the depth diverges sharply after Grade 9.
"The math inside chemistry is the actual problem."
Very often it is. Stoichiometry, rearranging equations and units account for more lost marks than the chemistry does, and we teach them explicitly.
